PolyPen RP 410 NIR

The PolyPen RP 410 by PSI (Photon Systems Instruments) is a sophisticated, handheld spectroradiometer primarily designed as a Leaf Analyzer for the non-destructive measurement of spectral reflectance on leaves and other planar samples.

It is an essential tool for plant science, agriculture, horticulture, and ecological research, providing rapid, portable, and precise data for plant health and physiological status assessment.

Key Features and Functionality

  • Spectral Reflectance Measurement: The PolyPen RP 410 incorporates an internal Xenon incandescent lamp to emit light (380 to 1050 nm) and measures the spectral reflectance off a leaf’s surface.

  • Automatic Index Calculation: The device’s firmware automatically calculates a wide array of commonly used reflectance indices (vegetation and stress indices), such as:

    • Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI): NDVI = (R_{NIR} – R_{RED}) / (R_{NIR} + R_{RED})

    • Photochemical Reflectance Index (PRI)

    • Normalized Pigment Chlorophyll Index (NPCI)

    • …and many others (e.g., Simple Ratio Index, Anthocyanin Reflectance Indices, Carter Indices).

  • Stress Detection: By monitoring changes in pigment content (like a decrease in chlorophyll or an increase in flavonoids/anthocyanins), the device can detect nutrient deficiencies or drought stress in plants long before symptoms are visible to the naked eye.

  • Customization: It allows for the calculation of custom-defined indices, enabling specialized research applications.
