The Unitree R1 Edu Smart (U2) is a specialized, mid-tier education version of the R1 humanoid series. Positioned as a “bridge” between the entry-level R1 Air and the high-performance G1, the U2 is designed specifically for research labs, AI developers, and advanced STEM education.

Unlike the consumer-focused base model, the “Smart U2” variant provides the necessary hardware and open-access software to develop custom AI behaviors.

  • Advanced Articulation (26 DOF): The U2 version features 26 degrees of freedom, including a 2-DOF neck, which is absent in the Air version. This allows for more human-like head movement and better environmental scanning.

  • High-Performance AI Brain: It is equipped with an 8-core CPU and an optional NVIDIA Jetson Orin module, delivering up to 100 TOPS of AI computing power. This enables real-time processing for deep learning, computer vision, and Large Multimodal Model (LMM) interactions.

  • Perception Suite: The robot uses a humanoid binocular camera for 3D depth perception and an ultra-wide-angle view, paired with a 4-microphone array and stereo speakers for voice interaction.

  • Secondary Development (EDU Exclusive): The “Edu” designation means it supports high-level and low-level programming via ROS, Python, and C++, allowing researchers to write their own control algorithms.
